Importing resources from a previous version

Note: OmniGraffle 7 was released on October 10, 2016, and now automatically imports your OmniGraffle 5 and 6 templates and stencils the first time you open the app. The following article has been archived for users still looking to import resources into OmniGraffle 6.

OmniGraffle 6 and OmniOutliner 4 were our first releases to conform to Apple’s sandboxing requirements for new apps. As such, your resources like templates and stencils now live in a different location on your computer than they did previously. Sandboxing restrictions at the time of release prevented these resources from being imported automatically, but here’s how you can manually import resources from OmniGraffle 5 / OmniOutliner 3, 4, or earlier into OmniGraffle 6 / OmniOutliner 4 or 5:

  1. Open OmniGraffle 6 or OmniOutliner 4 or 5 and select File > Resource Browser.
  2. Click the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) at the bottom-right corner of the window, then select Add Resources to Library… from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select the folder where you keep your resources. By selecting your home directory, you’ll import all the resources found within that directory, which includes the old app resources which used to live in your user library. For those unfamiliar, the home directory is your account in the Users folder — the account that’s currently signed in has a house icon next to the short name.

This will import all of the found resources in one go. Presto!

If you’re more comfortable manipulating files via the Finder, here are the full file paths for the old and new resource locations:

OmniGraffle 6 (Sandboxed)

~/Library/Containers/com.omnigroup.OmniGraffle6/Data/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniGraffle

OmniGraffle 5

~/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniGraffle

OmniOutliner 5 (Sandboxed)

~/Library/Containers/com.omnigroup.OmniOutliner5/Data/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniOutliner

OmniOutliner 4 (Sandboxed)

~/Library/Containers/com.omnigroup.OmniOutliner4/Data/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniOutliner

OmniOutliner 3

~/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniOutliner

All of these locations live in the User Library, which is hidden by default in OS X 10.7 Lion and later. To access the User Library, copy and paste the file path into Finder menu bar’s Go > Go to Folder… window. Alternatively, if you hold down the Option key while viewing the Go menu, an otherwise-hidden Library option will appear. macOS Sierra users: depending on your Finder settings, you may need to hold Shift instead of Option to access the Library from the Go menu.

Super handy tip! From the Resource Browser, right-click or Control-click a stencil or template and choose Show in Finder to open a new Finder window right to that resource’s location.
