Application and Data Security

User Data

The Omni Group takes security very seriously and we architect our applications with the security of your data in mind. Our software is designed to work without requiring users to connect to any servers, including our own. Many users choose to connect to our software update server to regularly check for application updates but this is optional and does not expose any of your document data.

Your data is stored on your device by default and you control how and where it is distributed. The Omni Group believes you should choose where your data is hosted if you choose to sync and we have built all our sync functionality on WebDav a technology that anyone can host themselves. Omni does not see that content unless you choose to give it to us.

Application Code

Our application code in our internal version control system is only available on the local Omni network or via secure VPN. Omni’s policy is that all employee hard drives storing Omni source code be encrypted with Apple’s FileVault technology. Physical access to Omni’s offices is also restricted.

We share some of our Framework code on GitHub but all changes from outside sources are reviewed carefully by a senior engineer.

In the event that a security vulnerability is uncovered we publish a new version of the application on our software update server as soon as the build finishes engineering and testing. Omni software purchased from the App Store or the Mac App Store will be subject to Apple’s App Review process before being available to users. When user action is required to address an issue a support article will be available here on our support site with detailed steps (example: https://support.omnigroup.com/security-2017-01-omnifocus-encryption/).

All current versions of our applications on the Mac and iOS have an announcement feature that allows us to notify customers of critical vulnerabilities. Release notes for each version of our apps are available on our website and within the app itself and detail the user facing changes for that release.
