All commercial Omni applications are available as either standalone purchase for a one-time fee or as a recurring monthly/annual cross-platform subscription, and the answer to “do I pay for updates” will depend on which of these purchasing options you choose:
Standalone Purchases
In alignment with App Store and longstanding Omni Group policy, the standalone traditional license option lets you purchase the current major version of a Mac or iOS application upfront for a one-time fee. With a standalone purchases you get same-version updates (e.g. OmniFocus 4.0 to 4.1) for bug fixes, minor features, and miscellaneous polishing at no additional cost. However, new major version of the application (e.g. OmniFocus 3 to 4) will require a paid upgrade.
On average, we offer free same-version updates every few weeks or months. Major version upgrades on the other hand (where we add major new features requiring a great deal of development) generally happen on the scale of a few years.
When we release major new versions, discounted upgrade options are available for customers who own previous app versions.
Cross-Platform Subscriptions
The cross-platform subscription option is a great way to always have access to the most recent version of one of our applications on all of your devices — Mac, iPhone, and iPad — for one consistent price. With options to pay monthly or yearly, subscribing gives you the flexiblity to pay to use an app just when you need it, and subscriptions always provide access to the latest version of an app, so you never need to worry about upgrade costs.
