Why do your menus use “Duplicate” instead of “Save As”?

Great question! Our document-based apps still offer a built-in menu option for Save As, but depending on the version of Mac OS X installed, you may instead see a Duplicate option. Starting with OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple automatically started replacing Save As with Duplicate for document-based apps like ours which include support for the new Auto Save and Versions features. (In other words, we didn’t remove it at all; Apple did.)

If you’re using OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or later, Apple has reintroduced the ability to access the Save As menu option. Open the File menu while holding down the Option key, and you’ll see Duplicate turn back into Save As. The new system default keyboard shortcut for Save As is Option-Shift-Command-S (⌥⇧⌘S).

If this change to Mac OS X makes your workflow less efficient, we’d encourage affected users to pass that feedback along to Apple.
