Manually moving files to and from a WebDAV server

OmniOutliner 2 for iOS and OmniGraffle 2 for iOS can automatically sync documents using OmniPresence. You can access the same documents on your desktop or laptop by installing OmniPresence for Mac.

If your server isn’t compatible with OmniPresence, or if you’d prefer to move files back and forth manually, it’s still possible to import and export documents to a WebDAV server manually. Here’s how!

Connecting from your Mac

  1. In the Finder, choose Connect to Server from the Go menu.

  2. When the Connect to Server window appears, enter the address for your WebDAV server, like https://your.webdav.com/address/ into the Server Address field. (Make sure to include the final / character; some versions of the Finder won’t connect if you omit it.) An optional step is to press the + button to add this address to your Favorite Servers list.

  3. Once the information has all been entered, click Connect. If it’s your first time connecting, you’ll be asked to authenticate. Enter the username and password for your sync account (not your OS X user account) to proceed. A new Finder window appears showing any files you’ve already uploaded to the server - possibly from other Omni apps.

Any files you drag to this window, or save to this location from the Mac app, are sent to the server. A good step to take at this point would be to open OmniOutliner or OmniGraffle on your Mac, create a new document, and save it to the server (you can do this in the normal way using the File menu). Name the document “Server Test” or something equally memorable.

Copying from the server to OmniOutliner 2 for iOS or OmniGraffle 2 for iOS

  1. Open our app on your iOS device and open the document picker to your Local Documents.

  2. Tap the Gear button in toolbar to the upper right of the screen and select Copy from WebDAV.

  3. Tap Add an Account if it’s your first time importing a file from a WebDAV share. Select the account type, then enter your sync credentials. After we check your credentials, tap the server location from the list to connect to the server.

The window will then list the files stored in your sync server account. Tapping a file copies it to your iOS device’s local documents.

Exporting from OmniOutliner 2 for iOS or OmniGraffle 2 for iOS to the server

  1. Select a document in the document picker to export. You can do this by tapping and holding the document preview, or by tapping Select in the toolbar and then tapping the document you’d like to export.

  2. Tap the share button in the upper left of the screen, then choose Export to WebDAV from the popover that appears.

  3. Tap the server location from the list (or first Add an Account if you haven’t already), then choose a file format to export the document as on the next page.
