Troubleshooting location-based notifications in OmniFocus

If you’ve already set up location-based notifications for tags in OmniFocus and are not receiving notifications, the following troubleshooting steps could help you discover what’s keeping those notifications from firing. To set up location-based notifications for the first time, assign a location to a tag in the Inspector.

Is OmniFocus running in the background?

Location-based notifications rely on Background App Refresh to tell iOS to use Location Services or send any notifications. Background App Refresh will not work if:

  • You have a habit of manually closing apps.
  • Your phone is in Low Power Mode.
  • If other apps are using a lot of memory, causing the system to close OmniFocus in the background.

Is the tag set up correctly?

Go to the Tags perspective, select a tag in the outline or sidebar, and tap the Inspect button in the toolbar to bring up the Inspector. From there, ensure the correct location is set, then check the Notification and Distance options that are selected for the tag — e.g. maybe you set the Notificaiton option to “When leaving” instead of “When arriving” or you might need to change to a smaller Distance option.

Does the tag have available actions?

Go to the Tags perspective and tap the tag in question. In the top toolbar, tap the View Options button , and choose to show Available items. If the list is empty, there will be nothing for OmniFocus to notify you about at the location. Try adding a new action or make sure that your existing actions are available (aren’t blocked by other actions and haven’t been deferred until a future date).

Does OmniFocus have access to Location Services?

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  • Ensure that Location Services is enabled.
  • Find OmniFocus in the list of apps here, and ensure While using the app is selected.

Do location-based alerts work for Apple Reminders?

Try adding a reminder, and set it up to get alerts for the same location as in OmniFocus. This can help to identify if the trouble you are having is unique to OmniFocus or due to other factors affecting your phone more generally.
