How to reset Orthogonal lines in OmniGraffle

OmniGraffle 7.8 for Mac and OmniGraffle 3.5 for iOS include improvements the algorithms used to route orthogonal lines. Any document opened in this version will be updated to use the new algorithm, so you should double-check that the lines in your diagram still look the way you’d like them to. You may wish to reset or adjust line handles and remove or add midpoints to some orthogonal lines if they don’t draw as desired.

The reverse of this is also true: documents containing orthogonal lines created with OmniGraffle 3.5 for iOS or later or OmniGraffle 7.8 for Mac or later might look different when opened in an older version of OmniGraffle.

Remove Midpoints and Reset Handles on the Mac

1. Switch to the Selection tab in the left sidebar
2. Click the orthogonal lines in the selection tab to select them all
3. In the menu bar choose Edit > Objects > Remove Midpoints and Reset Handles
4. Review the automatic routing of the orthogonal lines and make adjustments as necessary

If you need to adjust the new line path, either drag the orthogonal line handle or double click on the line to create one or more midpoints.

Review the orthogonal lines in the document, if you find one that doesn’t route as desired then follow these steps.

You can also use the Selection tab in the navigation sidebar to help you locate orthogonal lines in the document.

Lines with control handles

1. Select the orthogonal line
2. Tap the orthogonal control handle of the line (not the line itself) to bring up the context menu
3. Choose “Reset” from the context menu

If you need to adjust the new line path, either drag the orthogonal control handle or use the Add Point tool to create one or more midpoints.

Lines with midpoints

1. Select the orthogonal line
2. Switch to the Remove Point tool in the tool palette
3. Tap the points on the line to remove, automatic routing will take over as the points are removed
