Beginning with OmniOutliner 5, we introduced OmniOutliner Essentials: a much more svelte, focused, and extremely affordable outlining app designed to introduce the joys and benefits of outlining to a much larger audience. In the new Essentials edition, your entire focus is on your own content: there are no distracting sidebars or panels. You can choose to work in a window or in a distraction-free full-screen mode, selecting from a set of beautiful built-in themes. As you write, you’ll be able to see some key statistics about your content so you can track progress towards your goals. But our goal is to help you focus on your content and whatever task you’re working on — not on the tool you’re using.
Differences between OmniOutliner Essentials and past Standard editions
While OmniOutliner Essentials takes the place of the old Standard edition of the app availble in previous versions, it is not a like-for-like replacement. The Essentials edition lacks many features previously found in the Standard edition of OmniOutliner, and is therefore not intended to be an upgrade for existing Standard users. Below is a list of the most notable features that OmniOutliner Essentials lacks compared with past Standard editions:
- Support for multiple columns, and different column types
- Customizable templates and themes
- Customizable level and named styles
- Customizable fonts and background colors
- Embedded image and file attachments
- A sidebar to select and view only rows or sections of an outline
