Use Shape Recognition to draw basic shapes

When you select the Freehand Drawing Tool in the tool palette, you’ll notice that it has another tool above it; this turns Shape Recognition on or off when tapped.

When turned on, Shape Recognition lets you draw—either with your finger or Apple Pencil— the following shapes, converting your hand-drawn shapes to smooth shapes:

  • Square
  • Circle
  • Diamond
  • Pentagon
  • Hexagon
  • Octagon
  • Triangles

If you are using Apple Pencil, OmniGraffle can detect when the pencil tip is tilted, allowing you to draw shapes with a thicker stroke:

To draw the Adjustable Star, start by drawing a five-pointed star using the crisscross method. After the smooth shape is formed, use your finger or Apple Pencil to move the adjustment handles to alter the shape style. The outer adjustment handle allows you to control the number of points on the star, while the inner adjustment handle allows you to control the depth of the gaps between the star’s points.

Shape Recognition also works with lines, converting hand-drawn lines to straight lines. You can add single- and double-arrowheads to the line ends by either drawing a chevron or triangle over either side of the line’s end.
