OmniGraffle 6 FAQ

How do I tell if I have the Pro version of OmniGraffle installed?

Starting with OmniGraffle 6, we’ve introduced a single download file that accepts both Pro and Standard license keys. Pro features are unlocked when the appropriate license key is entered, but the application will still be named OmniGraffle in the Finder, Dock and Menubar. After entering your Professional license and restarting, you should be able to confirm that you’re running Pro from the OmniGraffle menu. Look for the grey text that states ✓ Professional Purchased.

You can also confirm that you’re using Pro from the Licenses… window, accessed from the same OmniGraffle menu. At the top of the window you should see Software Licensed: OmniGraffle Professional 6.

What happened to the OmniGraffle 5 downloads?

You can still download OmniGraffle 5.4.4 Standard and Professional from our archives.

Where’s the download link for the Pro version of OmniGraffle 6?

There’s now a single download for OmniGraffle that accepts both Pro and Standard license keys. Pro features are enabled when the appropriate license key is entered. During the free trial period, you can switch between Pro and Standard using the OmniGraffle > Free Trial Mode submenu.

I just installed OmniGraffle 6 and none of my stuff from OmniGraffle 5 is showing up.

OmniGraffle 6 is a completely new application, and comes bundled with a new set of stencils and templates. The Welcome document (Help > Getting Started) includes instructions for bringing over your existing custom stencils and templates.

Since so much has changed in the interface with OmniGraffle 6, it’s probably a good idea to review your interface settings rather than trying to copy them across wholesale.

You told me to upgrade my OmniGraffle, and now it doesn’t work! What do I do now?

OmniGraffle 6 is a paid upgrade for users of OmniGraffle 2, 3, 4 & 5. You can find out upgrade fee information at the Omni Store. You can download the latest versions using the following links:

Hey, every time I draw a line to another shape everything moves around and undoes my work! What gives?

Double-check to make sure that Automatic Layout isn’t turned on in the Diagram Layout Inspector. Some templates have this setting turned on by default to make the creation of properly laid out diagrams using the Outline Editor much easier.

Do you support import/export to Visio?

OmniGraffle Professional now imports Visio’s proprietary binary file format (VSD) as well as importing and exporting Visio’s XML document format, VDX. This is a pro-only feature, so the Standard version of OmniGraffle does not support import or export of Visio documents.

I just upgraded to OmniGraffle 6, and now everything’s in English. How can I switch to the language of my preference?

OmniGraffle 6 is not yet localized, so for now the application is only available in English. We’ll be adding the other languages back in a forthcoming free update. We’ve started the localization process but it does take some time, so thanks for your patience in the meantime!

Once localizations have been added to OmniGraffle, the application will default to the primary language you’ve selected in System Preferences. As long as you are regularly checking for and installing updates, the interface should automatically switch over to a localization once it becomes available.

I can’t access the OmniGraffle help documentation. What do I need to do to fix this?

To resolve your issue, you will need to delete the Help Viewer Preferences files ([help, helpui, helpviewer].plist) from ~/Library/Preferences/ (where ~ is your home directory). This will reset Help Viewer and allow you to use OmniGraffle Help properly again. You may also wish to do the same to the Help Viewer cache (located at ~/Library/Caches/).

Wow, this is the coolest application I’ve ever seen! Where’s the version for Windows or Linux?

While nothing is impossible (with the possible exception of traveling faster than the speed of light), a Windows or Linux version of OmniGraffle would be highly improbable, as there’s simply too much “under the hood” in OmniGraffle that’s tied directly to the Cocoa API available only in Mac OS X.

Hey. I. Would. Like. To. Beta. Test. Omni. Graffle. Too?

The bestest, most easiest way to get your foot on the inside of OmniGraffle development is to sign up for our User List. Announcements, discussion, answers and generic banter may be found within the many threads of the User Mailing List, weaving itself into a tapestry of OmniGraffle goodness. Keep an eye peeled on our blog as well, beta releases get announced there quite frequently.

OmniGraffle for iPad FAQ

Can I use OmniGraffle for iPad with existing documents and stencils from OmniGraffle for Mac?

OmniGraffle for iPad can open and edit documents created by OmniGraffle for Mac, though performance may vary depending on document size and complexity. We’re working to optimize the iPad version for the smaller amount of RAM available on the device; if you have sample documents or stencils you’d like us to include in our optimizations, please send them to us!

What’s the easiest way to move my files back and forth between Mac and iPad?

As of Version 1.9 (May 2013), OmniGraffle for iPad can automatically sync documents using OmniPresence and Omni Sync Server. By installing the free OmniPresence app on your Mac, you can have access to your documents on all of your devices. Click here to watch a brief tutorial on setting up OmniPresence. For detailed instructions, consult the OmniGraffle for iPad help and/or download OmniPresence for Mac.

If you don’t want to use OmniPresence, or your hardware limits you to older version of OmniGraffle for iPad that doesn’t support it, it’s still possible to import and export documents to the Omni Sync Server using WebDAV.

Is there a discount if I buy OmniGraffle for Mac and OmniGraffle for iPad?

OmniGraffle for Mac and OmniGraffle for iPad are separate products, with lots of independent work going into each one. We’re generally quite happy to offer bundle pricing for products purchased through our own online store, but there’s no way to do that when selling through the App Store. We’ve tried to make sure that each app is priced reasonably as an independent product, and we hope you’ll agree that both products become even more valuable when you use them together.

Do I have to pay for future updates?

The App Store policy and the longstanding Omni Group policy agree: minor updates should be free. Of course, if there is a major overhaul of the application with lots of shiny new features, we may release it as a new product, and that would cost money. But bug fixes, minor features, and miscellaneous polishing come at no cost.

Will more features be coming to OmniGraffle for iPad?

Yes! Feel free to send us email with any specific requests you might have.
