We strive to maintain backwards compatibility with earlier versions of OmniFocus as much as possible, but upgrades to the OmniFocus database format are sometimes required, in order to support new features. Database format upgrades are always opt-in — see more about migrating to a newer database format here — but once you upgrade, you will lose the ability to sync with earlier versions of the app.
Compatibility with OmniFocus 4
Below is a list of earlier OmniFocus versions which are capable of syncing with the latest version of OmniFocus 4. These are the most up-to-date versions of the app supported by older versions of macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and visionOS.
Compact-list
Be aware that if your database has already been migrated to use a newer database format, you will need to downgrade your database format in order to sync with an older version that doesn’t support all the latest database capabilities. For more on that, see Reverting to a previous database format.

Reverting to a previous database format
If you want to revert to a previous database format, in order to continue syncing with an older version of OmniFocus, you have two options:
- OmniFocus makes a backup before migrating to a newer database format, so if you just recently migrated you can try reverting to the backup from before you migrated. For more information on reverting to a backup, see our support articles for Mac and iOS.
- If you no longer have a backup you can revert to, or don’t want to lose changes you made after migrating, email our Support team to for assistance with downgrading the format of your current database.
