I purchased your app from the Mac App Store, but the app is asking for a license

Our applications are distributed in two different ways: the Omni Group store on our website, and the Mac App Store. While the apps are functionally identical between the two stores, the apps differ in how they are licensed. Each store is a separate distribution channel which offers an app download unique to that store. This is important to note because the Mac App Store version of our apps will not ask for a license.

If you need help determining which store your download came from, check out our article How to tell if you purchased from our store or the Mac App Store.

The Mac App Store will provide you with a version of our app that’s packaged together by Apple, and is tied together with the App Store’s own licensing system. Purchases made from the Mac App Store aren’t issued a license key; rather, the App Store itself will automatically license the software for you using your Apple ID.

If your Omni app is asking you to enter a license, this means you’re running a version of the software that was downloaded from our website, and not the Mac App Store. Software downloaded from our website will require a license key issued directly from Omni in order to run it beyond the initial 14-day trial. To get up and running with the correct version, follow these steps:

OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, and OmniPlan: Any documents you created with the Omni Store version are stored in a separate place on your computer than the application itself—such as your Documents folder, or whatever destination you picked when using File > Save—and will not be affected by uninstalling the app.

OmniFocus: If you previously started syncing data with the Omni Store version of the app, follow the steps in Migrating OmniFocus 2 trial data to the Mac App Store version.

  1. Start by deleting the app from your Applications folder by dragging it to the Trash. If the app was not installed in your Applications folder, we recommend checking the Downloads folder, or using your Mac’s Spotlight search to locate it.

  2. Download the app again through the Mac App Store. In the Account Tab in the Mac App Store, you should see our app listed with an “Install” button to the side. For more information and tips on this process, check out our article How to reinstall apps purchased from the Mac App Store.
